11/27/2023 0 Comments Do snakes hibernate in winter![]() Hibernation occurs in endothermic (warm-blooded) animals. However, there are some distinct differences in the biological processes: And in both hibernation and brumation, feeding stops throughout, resuming again in the spring. In both states, animals build up fat reserves before becoming dormant and use these reserves for energy over the winter. Both processes are dormancy triggered by drops in temperature and reduced daylight hours. And in fact, the two processes are quite similar. You may think that brumation is the same as hibernation. What’s The Difference Between Brumation And Hibernation in Reptiles? Many tortoises, geckos, bearded dragons and other lizards also brumate. Snakes aren’t the only type of reptile that brumates. This is usually the time of year when females seek a mate, to ensure that the babies will be born before the winter arrives. In the spring, when temperatures start to rise, snakes come out of brumation. ![]() The food would just sit in the stomach and eventually go bad, so the snake would become sick. The reason that snakes don’t eat during brumation is that they’d be unable to digestion their meals. However, they don’t eat during this time. They still drink water and will move to get to a water source. In fact, it can be hard to tell the difference between a brumating and a dead snake. They will seek out a place to rest, ideally near a source of heat.ĭuring brumation, snakes become very lethargic and do not move much at all. When brumation begins, snakes will stop eating. It’s, therefore, essential that their bodies contain enough fat to keep them going until the Spring arrives. In response, they may eat more than usual in order to build up their body’s fat stores.ĭuring brumation, snakes don’t eat at all. However, smaller species, like squirrels and mice, store food to eat slowly over the course of the winter. In late autumn, before brumation begins, snakes sense that the temperature is starting to drop. Most animals going into dormancy need to store enough food or fat to last the entire winter though! Larger species, like bears, eat tons of food in the summer and early fall and convert it into fat to use over the winter. Instead, they spend the winter months in brumation waiting for warm weather to return. This temperature change also means that reptiles can’t digest food for the whole winter. While their metabolism does decrease, the drop is forced by the cold weather since reptiles can’t create their own body heat. For instance, brumation is another, special kind of dormancy that snakes and other reptiles use. While hibernation is often used to describe any animal that goes into dormancy in the winter, there are three very specific requirements for an animal to be considered a true hibernator: reduced metabolism, slower heart rate, and lowered body temperature.Ī much broader array of animals experience forms of dormancy other than true hibernation. These environmental stressors cause a wide variety of animals to go into a state of dormancy. ![]() There’s less food and it is intensely cold. There are lots of different kinds of dormancy. That’s because hibernation is a really specific kind of dormancy.ĭormancy describes an animal that has slowed down its bodily functions for a little while, but hibernation has some very specific rules. ![]() There’s less food and it is intensely cold.ĭid your teacher ever tell you that every square is a rectangle, but not every rectangle is a square? Similarly, hibernation is a type of dormancy, but not all dormant animals hibernate. ![]()
